How to check a CPA license in California

Step by step: verify a California CPA or CPA firm license with the DCA license search, read the status and expiration date, and find enforcement history.

Short answer. Search the CPA's name or license number in the DCA license search (search.dca.ca.gov), confirm the status is Clear (active) and the expiration date is in the future, and check for citations or disciplinary orders, which the CBA publishes.

1. Search the official record

The California Board of Accountancy (CBA) licenses CPAs and CPA firms. Its records are searchable through the Department of Consumer Affairs license search. Search by name or license number. You can also run a quick search across the Board’s licensee file with our CPA check, which includes inactive and delinquent licenses.

2. Read the status

The CBA describes a Clear license as current and valid: the licensee can engage in the practice of public accountancy before the expiration date. An Inactive license is current, but the licensee may not practice public accountancy. A Delinquent license was not renewed by its expiration date and the individual has no authority to practice. See all statuses explained.

3. Check the expiration date

California CPA licenses are renewed every two years. To renew in active status, the CBA requires at least 80 hours of continuing education in the two years before the license expires.

4. Look for enforcement history

Complaints are not public, but the CBA says citations and enforcement actions are: accusations, disciplinary orders and citations are posted on the CBA website and provided on request. Statuses such as Clear, Probation or Clear, Restricted mean the license is valid but the licensee has been disciplined.

5. Match the record to the person

Compare the name, license number and city on the record with the engagement letter, invoice or website. A sole practitioner may use a name other than the one on the certificate only if that fictitious name is registered with the CBA.
